Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic

The Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic (RACPC) was set up to see people with chest pain and identify early those with heart symptoms and angina.

GPs refer people to the clinic if their symptoms may be related to their heart.

The clinic is a 'one stop shop' for most people, who may then be referred on for further investigation or treatment. It is led by the Consultant Nurse and a team of Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP).

Attending the clinic

Please bring with you all the medication you are currently taking.

If you are driving to the hospital, please allow time to park your car, as there is very limited space.

  • John Radcliffe Hospital site:
Come to Heart Centre Outpatients reception on Level 2 of the John Radcliffe Hospital.
  • Horton General Hospital site:
    Come to the Mayflower Suite.

A Nurse Consultant or or member of the team will ask some questions about your symptoms and how they have affected you. They will also ask you about other health issues which may be related to your symptoms.

Appointments are carried out by telephone or in person.

If you are invited to attend in person, you will have a brief examination and your blood pressure taken, and an electrocardiogram (ECG) will be recorded.

For the majority of people, we are able to offer them an idea, at the time of the appointment, whether the cause of symptoms is the heart. If this is the case, we will ask your doctor to start treatment immediately.

In some cases we may need to arrange further investigations. These will be explained to you at the time of your appointment.
