Neurorehabilitation

Neurorehabilitation aims to reduce disability and preserve function in a child or young person affected by a neurological condition, such as a stroke, infection, traumatic head or spinal injury, or brain tumour.

We see children and young people up to the age of 18, who have a significant neurological injury or condition which has reduced their ability to manage their everyday activities, for example walking, getting dressed and seeing friends.

Neurorehabilitation can help your child to reach their potential in all areas - physical, cognitive, social and emotional - helping them to return to their home, school and social life.

The team is based at Oxford Children's Hospital and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.

When a child is admitted following a neurological or spinal injury, our acute team of professionals will see them first, including:

  • doctors
  • nurses
  • physiotherapists
  • occupational therapists
  • speech and language therapists.

When appropriate, the acute team will ask the neurorehabilitation team to continue their care.

Paediatric Neurorehabilitation Team

The team comprises:

  • Carol Beaumont
    Physiotherapist
  • Charlotte Jones and Anne Myhill (both work part-time)
    Occupational Therapists
  • Emma Glisson
    Speech and Language Therapist
  • Emma Dunford
    Clinical Psychologist
  • Charlotte Evans
    Clinical Psychologist in Neuropsychology
  • Kate Scarff
    Neuropsychologist

On meeting the team an initial session will be carried out with two or more of the above team members.

We will work with you to plan meaningful goals and tailor your therapy sessions to help you achieve these.

We will give you a timetable for all your rehabilitatiaon sessions, and you will also attend the hospital school.

Once you no longer need to be in hospital, but still require rehabilitation from the therapy team, you will continue to see the same team at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre as an outpatient for two weeks.

We will support you to return to the community, and refer you to local therapists if needed to continue to work on your goals.

If you live outside Oxfordshire you will have the opportunity to stay in a local hotel for the two weeks, to limit time spent travelling.

You will follow a timetable programme whilst receiving outpatient therapy.
