Biopsies

Biopsies are routinely processed for microscopy and bacterial culture.

Fungal and mycobacterial (TB) culture can be requested if relevant.

  • Operate strict sterile precautions
  • Do not add fixative or formalin
  • State anatomical site and suspected cause

Routine bacterial culture - 6 days

Gram stain - within 24 hours of receipt

Pus / deep wound / fluid / abscess / biopsy / scrape / aspirate / valve MCS - > specimen type tissue
