Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) Fluid

CAPD fluid will have a culture, gram stain and cell count.

If requested, Mycobacterial (TB) culture and microscopy for acid fast bacilli can also be performed.

Send in a sterile universal container

CAPD fluid is inoculated into blood culture bottles upon receipt in the lab, to enhance culture sensitivity

Minimum volume

1ml (ideally 8-10ml)

Frequency of test

Daily

Turnaround time

Cell count - within 4 hours of receipt

Culture - 5 days (to negative result)

What to request on EPR

'CAPD' - > blood bottle culture (non-blood fluids)
