Consultant Nurse

The Consultant Nurse has responsibility for developing pathways that progress people with suspected or confirmed coronary heart disease, from the point of presentation with symptoms to treatment, follow-up and in some cases, longer term management of angina.

Responsibilities

Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic

Follow-up service for patients with coronary heart disease

This service is run in close liaison with our cardiac rehabilitation team and with our Consultant Cardiologist colleagues. Patients may require further investigation or monitoring, although most are discharged to their GP.

Heart attack patients

The Consultant Nurse works closely with other clinical teams to care for patients from first symptoms to recovery.

People with palpitations

The Consultant Nurse works alongside a Consultant Cardiologist to assess people with heart palpitations. Many heart rhythm disorders, whilst alarming, are not life-threatening and have no obvious cause. People who do have significant heart rhythm problems are referred to a specialist.

Organisational and national roles

The Consultant Nurse for Cardiac Medicine, Jan Keenan, is also joint organisational lead for non-medical prescribing at the Trust and leads a thriving learning group for the organisation's non-medical (nurse, pharmacist and allied health professional) prescribers.

She holds an honorary lectureship with the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Oxford Brookes University, working on the development of specialist education for senior nursing teams. She was appointed to the British Association for Nursing in Cardiovascular Care as Junior Secretary in 2007, and is now Honorary Secretary. This important position enables Oxford to contribute nationally to the development of clinical guidance and health policy.

Jan Keenan has also been involved in the development of heart attack and chest pain guidelines, and in the development of websites aimed at helping heart attack victims on the road to recovery.
