Keeping well this winter
09/01/2025
With temperatures continuing to fall across the county and respiratory illnesses on the rise, we wanted to remind you of some of the ways you can keep yourself well this winter.
Vaccinations
Rates of respiratory illnesses like flu and COVID-19 increase during winter and can make you really unwell. Check if you’re eligible for a flu or COVID-19 vaccination, as both offer you protection should you become ill.

Respiratory illnesses and children
Respiratory illnesses affect children too, especially Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
RSV is a common virus that causes coughs and colds in winter, and is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (a common chest infection) in children under two.
Respiratory illnesses in children can be very concerning for families, especially if this is the first time they have experienced it. For the majority of children, however, these illnesses will not be serious and care can be provided at home with simple measures such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, and fluids to help relieve symptoms.
However, if your child’s condition gets worse, you should seek medical help. More information is in our news story.

Choose your healthcare services wisely
Winter is a busy time for the NHS, especially Emergency Departments. Please use healthcare services wisely, and take simply steps to help us provide care for people who need it most.
This includes using NHS 111 online if you need non-urgent medical help, getting advice from your local GP or pharmacist, and consider your local Minor Injury Unit.

Care at home
Make sure you're stocked up on cold and flu medicine, and that you’re up-to-date with any prescribed medications you usually take.
Keep your home heated to at least 18°C if you can, and keep an eye out for any elderly or vulnerable family, friends, and neighbours.
