Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Departments of Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Departments of Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry at the John Radcliffe Hospital provide comprehensive care for patients with a focus on multidisciplinary care.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the surgical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck. The specialty is unique in requiring a dual qualification in medicine and dentistry.

Our consultants treat a range of conditions, including:

  • facial injuries
  • head and neck cancers
  • salivary gland diseases
  • facial deformity
  • facial pain
  • impacted teeth
  • cysts and tumours of the jaws.

In addition, the department provides an oral medicine service. Our maxillofacial surgeons are members of the oncology (cancer), cleft and craniofacial services, providing care within these multidisciplinary teams.

Orthodontics

The Department of Orthodontics at the John Radcliffe Hospital accepts referrals for advice and treatment from dentists and orthodontists for the management of problems related to the alignment of the teeth and jaws.

Treatment is provided for moderate to complex malocclusions and those requiring multidisciplinary care. We work closely with our maxillofacial and restorative colleagues within the Oxford University Hospitals, and with our dental colleagues in primary care, to provide a consultant-led service.

Restorative dentistry

The Department of Restorative Dentistry accepts referrals for advice and treatment of patients with priority to patients under the care of the cleft, craniofacial and oncology services.

With increasing expectations of dentistry, and people keeping their teeth longer, much of this treatment involves multidisciplinary care involving more than one specialty, such as orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery or plastic surgery.
