The 'GO' Team (Geratology - Orthopaedics)

When older people are injured, their treatment and recovery can be more complicated due to pre-existing illness and medications.

Orthogeriatricians work on the GO team and are specialists in the care of older, injured patients.

They make sure the patient is as fit as possible before surgery, manage medical conditions after surgery and liaise closely with the therapy and discharge teams to plan rehabilitation.

These doctors are particularly helpful if the patient has complex health problems prior to the injury or are frail.

Orthogeriatic care is a combined medical - surgical model which brings together consultants in both Trauma Surgery and Geriatric Medicine, along with specialist nurses, to treat both the fracture and frailty issues affecting people with hip fractures or major trauma.

This has been shown to improve outcomes by reducing post operative complications and the time people spend in hospital.
