Haematology Laboratories
The Haematology Laboratories Department works particularly closely with the haematology and haemophilia clinical services, which require a range of additional and specialised tests not usually required in other clinical services.
It is also closely linked with the National Blood Service.

Accreditation
The Department of Laboratory Haematology is an UKAS ISO 15189:2012 accredited laboratory (UKAS number 8464).

This accreditation is assessed on an annual basis.

All tests offered by the department, regardless of status of accredited scope, are appropriately verified prior to use and are all subject to the same quality control measures.
Subspecialties
Subspecialties include:
- haematological oncology
- haemostasis and thrombosis (including haemophilia, thrombophilia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura)
- haemoglobinopathy (including sickle cell disease and thalassaemia)
- transfusion medicine
- paediatric haematology
- laboratory haematology.
Sites
Our sites include:
- the main unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for receipt and testing of samples only, not taking of samples from patients
- a small laboratory at the Churchill Hospital
- a separate Haemophilia Centre at the Churchill Hospital
- a unit at the Horton General Hospital in Banbury, providing routine haematology and a 24 hour blood bank service.
The department processes approximately 650,000 Full Blood Count tests and 300,000 coagulation samples per year, and is fully computerised and linked, through the hospital network, to all wards and GP surgeries.
