Discharge Advice Following Breast Reconstruction Surgery (pdf)

After your surgery

Fit note

When you leave hospital we will issue a 'fit note' for you. If you are employed, this will sign you off work for two to three months, depending on the surgery that you have had.

Follow-up

We will call you on the Monday after you are discharged from the ward, to see how you are managing at home and to answer any questions you may have.

A Breast Reconstruction Specialist Nurse will see you two weeks after your surgery. We will give you this appointment date and time before you are discharged.

During this appointment we will review your wounds, change your dressings and answer further questions.

We will then arrange further follow-up appointments as required, for example for support with your wound dressings.

Your Consultant Plastic Surgeon will see you around six to eight weeks after your surgery, in clinic, to discuss the outcome of your surgery and plans for any further treatment.

Driving

If you are a driver, it may take up to six weeks before you can eturn to driving, dependent on the type of reconstructive surgery that you have had.

Please discuss this with us at your follow-up appointments. You may also need to contact your insurance company to ensure that you are appropriately covered.
