Physiotherapy

This page is for the Department of Rehabilitation Physiotherapy, which provides specialist neurological rehabilitation for both inpatient and outpatient services.

We are specialists in assessing and treating people with a wide range of neurological conditions including:

  • stroke and brain haemorrhage
  • multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • traumatic brain injury.

Following a detailed assessment and identification of meaningful, personal goals a rehabilitation plan is created which may include one-to-one sessions, group sessions or a combination of both.

Based on the outcomes of the assessment, we may offer a variety of physiotherapy treatment techniques and adjuncts.

The aim of rehabilitation physiotherapy is to help people maximise their ability to participate in functional tasks and to live as independently as possible.

We do this by:

  • increasing strength, flexibility, fitness and exercise tolerance
  • improving posture and balance
  • improving walking
  • improving arm and hand function.

Services and programmes

Outpatient Rehabilitation Physiotherapy service

This is a goal-oriented service, and the intensity of treatment is dependent on clinical need.

Sessions are usually face-to-face, but we can offer virtual appointments when required.

Dependent on the individual's goals, we may arrange joint sessions with the multidisciplinary team (MDT).

Physiotherapists work with the medical team in the Spasticity Clinic and with Occupational Therapists in the Splinting Clinic.

Neurological Rehabilitation Outpatient MDT Clinic (including nursing)

This clinic supports people with neurological conditions when they require input from several disciplines. We assess and monitor individuals and offer rehabilitation and therapy intervention based on identified goals.

The clinic is attended by staff members from:

  • Clinical Neuropsychology
  • Nursing
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Physiotherapy

dependent on the clinical needs of the individual.
