New app to reduce risk of clots and provide vital information

A new app, called 'Let's Talk Clots', is now available free to download from the app store.

Developed by staff from Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, in collaboration with Thrombosis UK, the app provides information on blood clots, and how to reduce the risk of developing one.

During hospital admission and after patients leave hospital, there is a risk that they may develop a blood clot. They should see a doctor or go to A&E immediately if they have any new redness, pain or swelling in their legs, have difficulty breathing, feel faint, cough up blood or have chest pain.

Details of the new app will be added to patients' discharge paperwork, and we hope eventually to include details on patients' admission paperwork, too.

Oxford University Hospitals Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Prevention Nurse Sarah Havord, a blood clot prevention specialist, said:

"This resource is very much needed, providing free access to medically-approved information across the blood clot journey and, I believe, will help to save lives and restore lives affected by blood clots.

"The app started simply as an idea of mine, and has been developed in collaboration with Thrombosis UK, allied healthcare professionals, individuals who have been diagnosed with a blood clot, and their family members.

"I have been overwhelmed by the amount of support and help provided - it really wouldn’t have been possible without all those involved.

"All I ask now is for you to please download this app and share it with others."  

If you go to the app store and download the app the first login page now includes a section for new users to register first.

Look out for postcards and posters around the Trust's hospital sites in Oxford and Banbury promoting 'Let's Talk Clots', which can be ordered and downloaded from the Thrombosis UK website, Apple Store and Google Play.
