Plastic Surgery referrals

Acute referrals

If you work in one of the region's Minor Injuries Units or in an Emergency Department, please make acute referrals to Plastic Surgery via OARS:

OARS (ouh.nhs.uk)

or contact the On-call Plastic Surgery Senior House Officer through Switchboard: 0300 304 7777

When sending a referral, please arrange for any radiological images to be made accessible by contacting your local Information Service Desk team

Photographs

Photographs help us to make clinical decisions and impact the advice and guidance we provide.

To send photographs, please use email (please do not send referrals through this channel, only photographs).

Email: plastic.trauma@ouh.nhs.uk

Ensuring adequate quality in photographs

We recommend considering the following factors to ensure adequate quality when taking photographs.

Field of view

Include a close-up and wide shot of the body part / wound, from all relevant sides / angles.

Orientation

Take the photograph square on to the subject; if a unilateral injury, include the unaffected side for comparison.

Clarity

Ensure photos are in focus, have a plain background, and that any debris is cleaned before taking the photograph.

Utensils

Consider using a ruler and marking out the boundaries of lesions / wounds.

Settings

Check the settings of the camera / device for the use of the flash, appropriate focus / resolution and colour saturation.

Directly Bookable Service for Plastic Surgery

The GP surgery will generate an appointment referral request with appropriate priority (urgent or routine) for the service on e-Referral and UBRN in the usual way.

An electronic proforma or appropriate letter needs to be attached to the e-Referral system by the surgery within 48 hours for a routine or urgent appointment.

In the case that the Trust cannot provide an immediate appointment, 'Defer to Provider' can be selected and Trust processes will be in place to contact the patient within 48 hours for an urgent or routine appointment.

18WW clock will start on the date the GP or patient makes the appointment booking.

GPs should check their patients have appointments on their e-Referral worklist. This applies to all appointment requests made through e-Referral.

Please note exclusions:

2WW to remain as existing process
