OUH Consultant Nurse wins 'Bone Idols' Clinician of the Year

OUH Consultant Nurse Gerard Mawhinney has been named 'Clinician of the Year' by the Bone Cancer Research Trust, for his dedication to treating and supporting primary bone cancer patients through their difficult journey, and for his commitment to ensuring their wellbeing beyond treatment.

He received his award at a special ceremony in Leeds on Saturday 3 February 2024.

The Bone Cancer Research Trust is a national charity dedicated to fighting primary bone cancer through research, information, awareness and support. Their Bone Idols Awards, voted for by patients and peers, celebrate excellence in primary bone cancer care and research.

Gerard works within the Oxford Spinal Surgery Unit and the Oxford Sarcoma Service, one of four national units providing specialist care to a population of around 10 million in the south west of England.

Alongside his clinical work, Gerard is studying for a DPhil in Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Oxford. His research explores how precision medicine is implemented and experienced by people living with a diagnosis of rare cancer such as spinal sarcoma.

Gerard says: "It is a privilege to work with patients and families living with spinal sarcoma. I am honoured to receive this award; it is a great personal achievement, but also national recognition for the dedicated work that the Oxford Spinal Sarcoma and the wider Oxford Sarcoma Service provide."
