Transplant Team Oxford victorious at British Transplant Games 2024

22/08/2024

Congratulations to Transplant Team Oxford, which have recently returned from the 2024 British Transplant Games with an impressive haul of 36 medals – including 14 gold, 11 silver, and 11 bronze.

44 competitors, all of whom have received a transplant at our Oxford Transplant Centre, took part in the 4-day event held in Nottingham earlier this month.

As well as the medals, the team also brought back the Transplant Sport Flag, as Oxford becomes the host city for the 2025 games.

It will be the first time the British Transplant Games are hosted in Oxford in its 40 years history.

The British Transplant Games aim to demonstrate the benefits of transplantation, encouraging transplant patients to regain fitness, whilst increasing public awareness of the need for more people to join the NHS Organ Donation Register and discuss their wishes with their families. They also look to thank and celebrate donor families and the gift of life.

Transplant recipients, including children as young as five, can compete in more than 25 sports at the games.

Taking place in different host cities every summer, the games see teams from hospitals across the UK come together to compete in a medley of sports. The 4-day event attracts around 1,000 transplant athletes and more than 1,700 supporters.

The games are supported by Transplant Sport, a national charity  whose aims are to raise awareness organ donation, encourage transplant recipients to lead active lifestyles, and to show appreciation for and remember donors and their families.

Team Oxford's manager Daley Cross, one of our Youth Workers in the Transplant team, said: "I am immensely proud of the team, and want to say a huge well done to all our competitors this year.

"They made Oxford proud but most importantly their donors even prouder. The camaraderie within the team is special, and it's great to see the value the team members get from the games."
