More than 2,800 nominations were received for the OUH Staff Recognition Awards 2024 - congratulations to all teams, individual members of staff, volunteers and fundraisers who were nominated, and thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate.

Oxford Hospitals Charity generously supports the Staff Recognition Awards, and we are grateful for their help which makes this important celebration of staff achievements possible.

Ahead of the awards, we wanted to introduce you to some of our finalists.  Good luck to them and all of our wonderful nominees ahead of the event on Thursday 5 September.

Social media posts will be posted live on the night – please do follow along on X by looking for the hashtag #OUHAwards2024

Award for Excellence

Dawn Cowley, Clinical Support Worker

Dawn is a Clinical Support Worker in the Emergency Department at the Horton General Hospital – a busy and demanding environment with no two days the same.

Her nomination read: "There is always an individual in a team who quietly in the background supports in multiple ways above and beyond their job role and that is Dawn. Her calm, pragmatic approach in one of the most stressful environments in healthcare has supported many staff, and she truly values each member of the team."

Dawn said: "I have been with the Trust for nearly 20 years, all of which I have worked in the Emergency Department at the Horton General Hospital.

"Receiving this nomination is so very special. I love what I do, and I appreciate the recognition.  I’d like to take this opportunity to wish my fellow nominees good luck!"

Award for Delivery

Rachel Collins, Head of Security

As Head of Security at OUH, Rachel often has to tackle difficult or sensitive situations on a daily basis.

She has recently marked her 28th year of working at OUH – which is incredibly impressive in itself!

Her nomination read: "Rachel demonstrates a high level of interpersonal skills and treats everyone with respect and courtesy. Very often she has to discuss painful and tragic events with patients and staff but she does so with dignity, calmness, fairness and consistency. She looks for ways to support others or reach out to new teams and collaborate."

Rachel said: "It means a lot to have been nominated. I aspire to do the best I can to make a difference by both improving security in the Trust and supporting staff who have been affected by incidents. This recognition acknowledges that effort, so I am very grateful."

Award for Learning

Irene Cores-Alcaniz and Daniel Hodgkins

Irene and Daniel were fundamental in the delivery of a collaborative partnership between OUH and the Open University to deliver an undergraduate nursing degree programme.

Their nomination read: "Irene and Dan have been hugely instrumental in implementing this project, truly representing a passion for learning and developing our future nursing workforce. The enthusiasm they have both shown has encouraged our OUH educators to work together in developing teaching materials and supporting our new group of learners."

Irene said: "I am honoured and thrilled to be nominated with Dan. I am passionate about learning, and I always wanted to help others with my experience. Being able to help students to become Registered Nurses is inspiring, and my dream work come true.

"It has been so rewarding to see our Blended Degree students thriving and receiving excellent feedback from patients."

Good luck to all our finalists – and thank you for all that you do!
