Charmaine Cox

29/04/2024

Charmaine Cox, a Staff Nurse on the Upper GI Ward at Churchill Hospital, received a DAISY Award in recognition of the exceptional care she provided for a patient who was with us for many months over the past couple of years.

Cheryl's nominator spoke highly of all of the staff on the ward but made a special connection with Charmaine.

They said: "Charmaine has been my absolute rock from the day I was first admitted. She is one of the most dedicated nurses I have ever met in my life. Nursing is not just a job to her. It's something she was born to do.

"I started having seizures whilst in the hospital. If Charmaine was on shift, she would be by my side within a matter of moments. She would stand beside me with her hand either on my forehead, stroking my hair or holding my hand, talking to me in a calming manner. She said she wouldn't leave me – she never broke that promise to me."

The nominator also shared a special instance that had lasting impact on them, when after an epileptic seizure they kept asking for Charmaine, while her shift had ended.

"I kept asking for her and each time I did she would be by my side with her wonderful, caring, and reassuring tone. By this time, it was well past the end of her shift. That evening, she stayed on the ward until I was firmly asleep before she went home.

"You can teach almost anyone to be a nurse, but as well as her incredible skills, Charmaine has things that can never be taught. Her loyalty, her tenacity, and most of all her amazing caring nature. I'm so honoured not only to have had her taking care of me, but to know her at all. She truly is an asset to the nursing profession.

"She really does deserve such amazing recognition because, to her, she doesn't think what she does is special. I'm not sure how I would have gotten through all this without her."

Congratulations Charmaine, and thank you for all you do.
